Murfreesboro Farmers Markets
June 9th, 2010
Last month’s flooding in Tennessee hurt many of the local farmers and their crops, but that still hasn’t stopped them from bringing in fresh produce to two fantastic farmers markets in Murfreesboro, a suburb city 35 miles away from Nashville; the Rutherford County Farmers Market and the brand new Main Street Saturday Market .
The Main Street Saturday Market just had its very first opening day June 6, 2010. The market sets up on the west side of the courthouse in The Square, conveniently located next to several hotels Murfreesboro offers its visitors. The Main Street Saturday Market features fresh produce from local farmers. With the recent floods, many thought that this would push back the opening date, but farmers brought in what was still untouched by the flooding, bakers brought in the best, fresh baked goods, there was also plenty of honey, herbs, plants, flowers, and cheese being sold on opening day. The vision of the Main Street Saturday Market came to fruition, which is to stick to Tennessee grown vegetables, fruits, and other produce made in Tennessee. The opening day atmosphere was charged with excitement, may it’s success continue.
The Rutherford County Farmers Market , located at 315 John R. Rice Blvd. is a brand new location and facility that’s covered and there’s also an indoor facility, which is climate controlled making this market a comfortable place for patrons to purchase local produce no matter what the weather is, plus there’s ample free parking. This market is open on Tuesday and Friday from 6am to 11am and is seasonal, from June through October. Rutherford County Farmers Market also has a great selection of fresh-from-the-farm produce, baked goods, soaps, wool fibers, wood, beeswax candles, plants and a corn and hay maze. Because of the new facility, the market has attracted many more vendors and more visitors, so make sure to come early, because the best produce goes quickly.
