Delhi is Removing Illegal Street Hawkers before the Commonwealth Games
September 1st, 2010
The National Association of Street Vendors in Delhi has somewhere near 350,000 hawkers that sell their wares on the streets. Most street hawkers live in a hand-to-mouth existence and most times than not, they are the main breadwinners in a family of five or more. Currently, most of the illegal street hawkers are being evicted before the Commonwealth Games begin in October and the economic fallout from a large section of Delhi’s working class will have a great impact.
Among more than 4,000 hawkers who sell their wares on the pavements of Sarojini Nagar Market , their livelihoods are now being threatened. Last June, the Delhi authorities announced that roadside cobblers, vegetable sellers, presswallahs (clothes ironers), and ‘illegal’ vendors selling clothes and food were considered a major security risk and would be evicted.
Many of the hawkers have applied several times for licenses; some have been trying for years. Since they have not received their licenses, they are considered ‘illegal’, even though they can show authorities documentation of their applications. Officials from the municipal corporation have begun arriving to the very popular market every morning and do not let anyone set up their stalls.
The Commonwealth Games are going to be the biggest sporting extravaganza the India capital has ever hosted. Tons of thousands of tourist and visitors booking up all the Delhi hotels are expected to visit the city for the Games. Delhi wants to put its best foot forward; it wants to start appearing clean, orderly and rich. The street hawkers and the beggars either must be legal or move their stalls to another town.
When the Travel Bug Bites
August 29th, 2010
One of the dreams many people have as they make their transition into adulthood is to tour the world. And while this might seem like a romantic notion to some people, it is a strong ambition to others. And regardless of whether or not you take a year off of school to discover yourself, many people have a love for travel and almost all agree that it is one of the most important aspects of their lives. There are also a large number of people who develop a strong travel bug after one unexpected and mind expanding experience on a vacation. And for those people who dream of traveling across the globe you can almost always find a variety of world maps on at least one of the walls in their home.
Of course there is another population of travelers, and sometimes the two intersect, who are interested in exploring every city, state and region in their own country. And with these people, who are also usually in the process of planning a new road trip, you can be sure that there is a heavily drawn on and highlighted road atlas in their study or vehicle and perhaps an atlas on the wall that emphasizes every place they have visited. You would be impressed at the complicated chartering practices these travelers come up with. And one thing is certain, they love documenting their trips as much as they love taking them. Travel more, you’ll grow.

Gondola Rides at the Venetian is Romantic
July 27th, 2010
Where else, but in Las Vegas can you experience a real live Gondola ride that make you feel like you’re in Venice. ‘O Solo Mio’ is heard throughout the casino as the gondolier serenades their gondola guests; gondolier trained by masters in Venice, Italy by-the-way ! You’ll be taking a trip that you’ll never forget, and you’ll even get to buy a photograph of you and your companion to help remind you about your wonderful experience.
The Venetian is one of the better Las Vegas hotels , which offers gondola rides that travel along the canals running through the Grand Canal Shoppes and runs outside as well. The concept is great, take a gondola ride though the hotel while your gondolier serenades you makes for a good change of pace from all the gambling, walking, eating and people watching. Guests get a choice of making reservations for either the indoor or the outdoor ride. Guests are only allowed to make reservation the same day and the ride lasts 20 minutes.
The indoor gondola ride will navigate you through St. Marks Square, past the great shops and under the walking bridges. There’s no privacy, but you’ll enjoy the onlookers who smile and wave at you. The Outdoor option is most like the being in Venice, Italy, especially when the sun shines down or the wind blows on you, just be aware if the weather is not favorable, the outside gondola rides cannot be scheduled. When making the reservations specify that you want a private gondola ride or otherwise you might end up sharing the ride with another couple, and remember to tip the singing gondoliers, that’s how they make their living.
Capo Crucet’s Miami
July 23rd, 2010
Miami has its share of artists and writers, certainly. It’s a very cosmopolitan place, with a deep connection to the world at large, and the art world here often branches into a realm of understanding that does border on the global. In part, that’s a result of the unique blend of people that call Miami home. The Cuban population, which has never been homogenous, is tied to two worlds, at the very least, the one here and the one over there, and at times the ties extend in limitless directions.
The great writers that come from Miami don’t have a lot in common except for a unique sense of compassion for the human experience. There are a few that have chosen the sense of exile and community as their theme, and joining these ranks is Jennine Capo Crucet .
Her collection of short stories, ” How to Leave Hialeah ,” put her on the literary map, and won her all kinds of acclaim from foundations and readers. It also saw her leaving Miami for Los Angeles, where she is now based. But her work is still inextricably connected to the local scene here. It may not be the stories heard in Miami luxury hotels , but it is indeed deeply connected to the land, in all its rootless ruminations.
Union of the World in Miami
July 19th, 2010
Every city has to have its own claim to fame. This might be the best citrus, the biggest ball of string, or the highest building. Some cities, like Miami, have so many claims to fame that it’s impossible to recount them all, and the innovative population here is always reaching for new heights. Those who are visiting the best Miami spas , then, aren’t just in for a relaxing vacation, but the chance to see much, much more.
The superb restaurants and the exciting clubs make it a great place to relax during the day, and have an exciting time all night. But there’s more than this, too. As of this year, Miami is also the home to the largest bronze sculpture of Greek mythology in the world. It was unveiled at the end of January, 2010, and is a work that’s 26 feet high and weighs over 17,000 pounds.
A sculpture like that is a little hard to ignore, and it’s made for seeing. It’s the work of Spanish artist Gines Serran , whose mix of visual art and anthropology have won awards and commissions for a few decades. This work is intended to be a kind of partner to the Statue of Liberty. Called the Union of the World, it’s inspired by the possibility of world peace, and is a remarkable thing to behold.
Chicago, Illinois One of the Nations Theatre Towns
June 22nd, 2010
Chicago is known across the nation for a lot of reasons and some of them are more charitable than others, however they all testify to the prominence of this city in American culture. Among the diverse outstanding aspects of this city is the fact that it is frequently recognized s one of the great theatre towns in this country. With prominent companies such as Steppenwolf being standard theatrical icons, there are other great and sometimes experimental companies that also make up the city’s scene. Seeing a play in the city is a frequent priority for the guests in one of the boutique hotels Chicago, USA .
Mary’s Attic, Oracle Theatre, The Black Ensemble Theatre , The Chopin, Second City and the Gift Theatre are a small list of names in a great theatre community. And these as well as numbers of others also represent the diversity of genres and types of theatres that are present in the city. The Gift Theatre is currently producing Suicide, Incorporated, which is an interesting take on corporate life and is also extremely interesting in structure.
The Chopin Theatre is one of the city’s premiere establishments that presents some of the top shows from the theatrical cannon as well as introduces great new premieres. Such is the case for its current production of Baal in its TUTA Theatre. This is world premiere performance of the play that has the same name and is loosely based on Bertolt Brecht’s version. One of the original aspects of the TUTA production is the integration of music to heighten the original story of Brecht. With a focus on the musicality of the words, this fusion of drama and music may not apply the same Epic structure of music to the stage that Brecht intended and it would be interesting to see what the company is doing with it. Of course Baal was written before Brecht’s Epic theatre and the famous Alienation technique were established, thought the original play did have some of these components.
