People going into sales for the first time often have high expectations of what is going to happen. It’s somehow even more so when the person is a door to door sales person. Even if they are a person who has never bought anything from door to door sales people, they feel like they are going to get out there and make thirty sales a day each of them more than a hundred dollars and they are going to become rich overnight. While this is partially promised by some sales schools, for the most part these ideas are brought on upon themselves as they dream of greatness. This isn’t to say that in your first summer working for someplace like Southwestern Company you won’t do great, but it is to say that you should have realistic expectations.
You will get the door closed in your face a lot. You will see a lot of no solicitation signs and you will have to stay away from those areas. If you can sell at all you will get some sales. You will probably be expected to find your own place to live, and pay for your own food. You will want to work long hours, because the more you are working the more money you are making. There will be some good things about what you can expect though. Some of them are things that you wouldn’t think right now are things you should worry about, but if you ever end up working for a bad company you will know why you should expect these things and how hard it is to work without them.
Expect the support of your company in the form of meetings occasionally. The company you are selling for should provide you with accurate information about the product. There should be enough information that you can answer any question customers may ask. If there is another product on the market out there and they have research on it, it is reasonable for them to give you the information needed about the comparison between the products. There should be some kind of job description, or contract that explains the nature of your relationship to the company in writing. They should not kill you with training fees before you go out and start making money. If you are a direct seller like those who work for Southwestern Company you can expect that they will safeguard your personal information. It is you who is buying from them, not your customers. Your customers are buying from you .
If any of these things are missing there is a problem and you should probably not get into the business in the first place. There are a lot of unethical companies and a lot of ethical companies out there. You will need to wade through one to find the others but they are often worth the money you can make with the help they provide you.
