Many cities offer walking tours, but it’s a rare thing to find a walking tour for free that’s also one of the highest rated walking tours in Washington DC. Tour guides make their money through tips, not fees, and offer a tour which people consider to be funny and smart.
“More than Monuments,” offered by DC by Foot goes out daily, except for Mondays, and allows you to see the main sites, such as the Capitol Building, the White House, the Jefferson Memorial, the Washington Monument, the WW II Memorial, Signers’ Island, the Vietnam Wall, the Korean War Memorial, and the Lincoln Memorial.
Whether you’re staying with friends or in the four star hotels Washington DC offers, it’s an easy ride on the metro to either Federal Triangle (Blue and Orange lines) or Metro Center (all lines) to locate the meeting point on the North East corner of 15th and Constitution Avenue, North West. The corner is next to the Department of Commerce, and you’ll know you have the right guide because he or she will be wearing a baby blue colored shirt. The tour itself takes an hour and forty five minutes, and you’ll be expected to walk a little over one mile. There’s no need to RSVP; you’ll just need to show up; however, groups of twelve or more are asked to schedule a tour privately.
If you enjoy the free tour, DC by Foot also offers other tours of the area for a relatively low cost. For ten dollars, it’s possible to join the Lincoln Assassination Walking Tour, where you’ll learn more about the assassination than you learned in school, and walk the streets and see the buildings, such as the Ford Theatre, where this dramatic event in the nation’s history occurred. If you like ghosts, too, there’s the Ghosts of Georgetown Walking Tour, which allows you to learn about the secrets of DC’s best neighborhood. There’s even a tour that seeks to uncover ancient symbols in Washington DC known as the Secrets and Symbols tour. Collectively, these tours may be the best way to discover the real capital city of the nation.
