Anaheim Sea Stories

There is an awful lot to see and do in Anaheim, California. Nestled in Orange County, but boasting a more modest per-capita income, the city is friendly and interesting. There is, of course, the obvious attraction that draws so many people here every year, but it’s also got some precious charms that are all its own, offering visitors the very best. Anaheim hotel accommodations are famous, and promise a wonderful place to relax at the end of some very busy days.

Although the theme parks and sports teams tend to dominate the news about the city, there are lots of famous people with their roots in Anaheim. A number of actors, which makes sense being so close to Los Angeles, have their ties to the town. There are also what seems to be an extraordinarily high number of famous guitarists from here, including the lead guitarist for Quiet Riot, and Jeff Buckley, who seems to be re-inventing the instrument for a new generation. There’s another local son who’s made good in the world, and his first career was teaching marine biology at the Orange County Ocean Institute .

He landed this after graduating from high school in Anaheim, and the dream of the ocean wasn’t as strong as his other great love. Stephen Hillenburg pitched his idea for an animated series about an underwater city in 1998. The original title was SpongeBoy, but that copyrighted already, so he changed it to Bob. The main character was originally drawn as a natural sponge, but he changed it to the square shape, because he thought it was funnier.

It turns out that all his moves were blessed with perfect timing, because the world was ready for the show’s absurd humor and extremely imaginative take on reality. It’s one of those shows that speaks to adults as much as to kids, and even tends toward the avant-garde in some respects. This is the tradition of Bugs Bunny, and he’s entered into very good company.
