Plano, TX to drop Rapid Transit Line

March 31st, 2010

The Dallas Area Rapid Transit or DART is a Dallas, Texas based transit agency that operates most of the buses, light rail, commuter rail, and HOV lanes in Dallas and 12 of its suburbs. Dallas Area Rapid Transit is the largest light rail operator in Texas, with approximately 45 miles of light rail tracks and plans to increase its coverage of the Dallas Fort worth area underway.

Recently though, Plano officials inquired about leaving the Dallas Area Rapid Transit system after some citizens complained about being taxed for a service they don’t use. This tax is approximately one cent and is supported by Dallas Area Rapid Transit’s 13 member cities. The city will still owe debt payments for years to come to Dallas Area Rapid Transit even if Plano votes to withdraw from the agency. Under current statutes and laws the soonest Plano could hold an election on leaving the transit agency is 2014 and even if the vote passes Plano could expect to pay outstanding debts to DART for the next 10 to 15 years.

It baffle’s me why a cities citizens would block public transit of any form. Public transit encourages tourists to Dallas and the surrounding area, who prefer to not rent a car on their stays in the region to visit and do commerce in regions they couldn’t normally reach from their hotel . This is a sentiment shared by many of the downtown Plano businesses . Since the installation of the Dallas Area Rapid Transit rail business in the area has thrived. New apartment complex and retail construction have sprung up, as well as older businesses near the downtown rail station beginning to report a sizable increase in customers and sales. Just proving more soundly that affordable, rapid public transit is extremely good for the economy as well as the ecosystem.

Los Angeles Holds Your Space

March 29th, 2010

There are a stunning number of things in Los Angeles that have an effect on how the world does things. The most obvious of these, of course, is the movie industry. By catering strictly to the tastes of 18-24 year old boys, the film business manages to somehow shape reality for nearly everyone who lives on the planet. There is something very catchy about the images of pretty people doing pretty things, or having wild adventures, that strikes everyone in some significant way, apparently.

Some film theorists say that this is a complex process, where the film image projects images that audiences accept and internalize. Once this happens, then they are willing to internalize more, so that their identity, and our identities for that matter, are composed of pieces of what we want to be, and what we think we want to be. It’s a kind of game that used to only happen in Hollywood, but now we play it every day through the films, as well as through networking sites.

Visiting the town and holding up where there are some excellent
hotels
, there is a great chance to get to hear about how people live here. Like anywhere, there is a lot of talk about the sites. More than anywhere, there is some very conscious effort being put into the profiles. And there is a great deal of agonizing over things that happen on these sites, because they seem to mirror reality.

It’s hard to imagine what might happen with the decline of myspace , and although there are some who say it will come back, others suggest it’s going away , which means that a lot of performances of self might go somewhere in a lost space in time. These were much more complex things to build that facebook, and there was more room to perform the self here. Although it might turn out that we are more sophisticated after all, and become complex in how we perform on facebook, using the fan pages like the French used to use the handkerchief, inventing a language of flirts that no one could have imagined, and no movie company could ever create.

The Importance of Management Training Workshops

March 25th, 2010

Choosing a specific training company for corporate and business management staff can be a difficult process. And as many businesses are outsourcing their standard training needs this is becoming more important and fundamental to their internal stability and structure. This is one of the main reasons that researching your management training company is essential. However, once the decision is made to do so and as a corporate or private company leader you are comfortable with your choice the rewards can be extreme.

Companies that specialize in management and or staff training have a distinct edge over independent internally based business or inhouse training programs. Part of what makes them successful is the amount of research that is put into the best skills and techniques that are needed for staff and management personnel in any field. By accessing the training seminars and workshop from one of these specialized companies you can gain for your business the necessary competitive edge in today’s market. With the difficulty faced in the current economy by many of the new independent as well as established corporations, every piece of competitive leverage that can be gained is important.

It is also important to realize that a training company will generally have a diverse catalogue of seminars and training programs, and these will focus on various career elements and field techniques. There are workshops that deal with a survey education on the basics of any field skills and give the attendee an overall competence in their job position. Other seminars are designed for specialized focus on a particular technique or skill topic. Various programs are in place to take a successful businessperson’s career to a new level and to re-introduce the basics to those in need, or are perhaps new to a company or are returning to a field. There are quality educational resources for people in all areas of their career and accessing these can make the difference between successful and mediocre career.

Rittenhouse Square Art Show in Philadelphia

March 15th, 2010

Seventy-nine years ago, in June of 1932, some Philadelphia art students were trying to figure out a solution to a problem that artists still struggle with today: A place to exhibit the work. The solution then was to hang the art work between trees, pinned to a clothesline, in Rittenhouse Square . They called themselves the Art Student’s League, and had met at the Graphic Sketch Club, which is now better known as the Samuel S. Fleisher Art Memorial, with a teacher named Earl Horter, a Philadelphia artist known internationally. Today, if you’ve checked into one of the luxury hotels Philadelphia provides its visitors, especially in June, you may want to check out what’s happened to this little exhibit, which has now transformed into one of the best respected and best attended outdoor art show in the United States.

The transformation occurred slowly, gradually gaining in popularity. It became known as the Clothesline Show, and expanded to include professional artists as well as students. Giving art students a chance to exhibit their work, though, has been the main focus of the exhibit from the start. The secondary goal is to give Philadelphia an excellent art show with equality work. If you attend, you will always have the opportunity to see fresh and new artists exhibiting the latest work. In 1976, the show changes its name to the Rittenhouse Square Fine Arts Annual, in order to emphasize the fine art as opposed to the clothesline. It’s now achieved the status of the oldest, continuously run outdoor art show in the country.

In 2004, 73 years from the start of the Clothesline Show, the exhibit expanded past its borders of the park. For years, the art was contained inside the park, with tents and canopies, even clotheslines of fine art, but now it moves to the sidewalk that surrounds the Square. The event changed its name again, this time to “Circle the Square.” For any traveler in the Philadelphia area in the months of June and September, it’s a proof positive how much a few people can do when they decide to create a place for themselves in the world of art.

A Little Wine Tasting in Seattle

March 3rd, 2010

With almost everything checked off on my list of things to do in Seattle, I decided to just stroll around. I passed the quaint wine and olive oil shop and the sign in the window said something about wine tasting. That was good enough for me! I walked in and looked around for a minute, then walked up to what seemed like the wine bar where wine tasting took place. The shop was called La Buona Tavola, and was run by this extremely outgoing guy, David.

I was at the correct place were I could sample wine, David poured me a wonderful wine from Italy. I was just in Italy last week, so this brought back good memories. The wines at the La Buona are all from family owed and run vineyards. David actually goes to the vineyards and spends a good amount of time with the families and thoroughly checks out if the wines these family run vineyards are the wines he wants to see at his shop. I found each wine I tasted to be of a high-quality and learned that most of the wines he buys have produced only a few cases! That told me that these wines were out of my price range for sure! But, I was so delighted to meet someone would loves wine to much to cheapen it’s qualities.

Feeling a bit spirited after the wine tasting, I headed back to my hotel in Seattle,so I could take a little nap before heading back out to explore some more. By-the-way, I booked my hotel at this site, I found this site to have the best hotels with the best prices.

On my way back, I would pass some restaurants and if they posted their menus outside, I read what they had to offer. I was great to see so many restaurants using local produce, geo-friendly products and organic foods. There was one restaurant in particular that I’ll have to come back to after my nap. It was the restaurant of the chef I met when I was back in the wind shop. He dropped by to pick up some of Davids better stock.

Ensuring Privacy with Your Blinds

March 1st, 2010

Privacy is a big thing these days. Everyone keeps very much to themselves and, as a result, we often do not even know who our neighbors are. We drive straight into our garages , shut the door, and go inside without any interaction with those who may be outside. It is not that we do not like people; we just want and value our privacy. Home is our refuge away from the rest of the world. One area of the house that largely affects that need for seclusion is the windows. Big panes of clear glass, windows can allow just about anyone walking by to see inside. If your current window treatments are just not cutting it there are a few things that you can do.
Some types of sheer or lightweight shades may seem effective during the day; however at night, when the lights are turned on, your house becomes a fish bowl for anyone in the neighborhood to see in. Shades are very effective at reducing the amount of uv rays that come into your home so do not rule them out completely. Because they come in a variety of styles and fabrics, choosing something in a darker, thicker material would go further to maintaining your privacy. For an even more effective way to ensure your privacy, consider wood blinds . They allow zero visibility from the outside when the slats are closed and restricted visibility when they are open. They also create a very classy yet simple look.
In an age where identity theft is not a matter of if but when it is no wonder we hold on so tightly to our privacy. As we attempt to create a safe, protected environment for our families the fabric we put on our windows can often make all of the difference.
