Difficulties Getting to Lafayette, LA

October 28th, 2009

Lafayette, LA is such a cool place, we were there over the summer and had a really great time. It was funny trying to pull the trip together it seemed like there was something in our way, something that didn’t want us to go but we did. The week before going we got a big scare that my mother in law was really sick. Fortunately it turned out to be a minor problem and she is OK. We thought we were going to have to cancel the trip. Then the day before we were to leave my wife’s boss was trying to give her a project and said she needed to get it done right away. He knew she was leaving on vacation but insisted the project be done. Fortunately one of her co-workers took on the project to help her out. When we got home she found her self a new job and left him with about as much notice as he had given her for the project. The the morning we were leaving was a comedy of errors. From unexpected visitors, phone calls that wouldn’t end, locking the car keys in the trunk, the pet sitter canceling our at the last minute, that’s all I can remember quickly. Fortunately we prevailed above all the issues, got a new pet sitter and we were on the road. About two hours latter than we had planned, but no problem as we guaranteed out rooms for late arrival at hotels Lafayette that was one thing we did not have to worry about.

Once we got on the road everything went smoothly. The weather was nice and sunny, we missed the construction getting out of town and went smoothly on our way. Having gotten on the road a little latter than we wanted to we ended up arriving in Lafayette for a late dinner and got to our rooms for a night of sleep.

Our stay there was very interesting. Visiting antebellum mansions and museums. Eating the infamous Cajun cuisine and hanging in jazz and blues clubs until late into the night. We had a lot of fun and am sure glad we didn’t let any of those obstacles get in our way.

Cape Town is a Different Africa

October 26th, 2009

Cape Town is a truly stunning place. It’s so modern and western, it actually doesn’t feel like I’m in Africa. Cape Town is so very different from the rest of the entire Continent of Africa. It’s actually pleasant to be back in a city where I can have the convenience of a hot shower, Cape Town fine dining, shops, and decent roads.

My first day, when I arrived, I caught a minibus to Long Street, a backpackers hub in Cape Town. I checked into my hostel and then hit the shops. The next morning, I picked up my car hire, which I’ll have for an entire month. I’ll drop it off in JoBurg. I find this the best way to travel. It’s great having the Independence to do whatever I want again.

I said goodbye to the group of people I met during my truck tour of Africa, they were all at the bar called Quay 4, which is located on the pretentious V & A Waterfront. It was a fun night and I really enjoyed all of their company during my truck trip.

I first visited the gorgeous Bloubergstrand beach, which is just north of the city. It had a superb view across to Table mountain. I watched the kite surfers hitting the big waves coming in from the Atlantic ocean. I then drove south of the city and marvelled at all the vast scenery around Camp Bay and around Houts Bay. I then drove back into the city center. Cape Town has tons to offer, there’s so much to do and see, it’s unreal. The next morning I drove a few hours south into the Peninsula where I visited Cape Point and then on to the most southwestern point of Africa, the Cape of Good Hope. I got to see a whale and her baby off of one of the beaches in the national park. Now that was even more stunning than Cape Town!

How to Win Friends and Influence People Author

October 22nd, 2009

In Roman Polanski’s “The Ninth Gate,” one of the characters is seen reading the famous book, “How to Win Friends and Influence People.  After watching the movie on SyFy the other night, I decided to look more into the history of the book.  I had seen it referenced in other films, but my curiosity finally got the better of me.

It was written by a man whose name is Dale Carnegie.  He had a  lot of influence on the business world, from corporate team building to sales management.  It also turned out to not be the scheming book I thought it was going to be.  From the title, I assumed it was going to be another guide on how to climb the corporate ladder, but it was better than that.

Carnegie was actually all about sincerity.  The people you work with or are friends with are not just there for your use.  That facet of the book was something got stressed quite a bit.  I guess from its placement in the film with a character that was quite manipulative, I thought the book was going to be a Machiavellian guide to modern day manipulation.  His book is taking from the point of view of edifying yourself about social skills.  The book has been so popular and for so long, it has about sixteen million copies sold since it was initially published in 1936.  I also had no idea the book was that old.  It seems sort of timeless from all the references that get made to it in popular culture.

One of the things the book stressed was to make social situations not about you.  Being a good listener was accentuated many times, and Carnegie did mean listening, not just hearing the other person talk while you pretend to listen.  He also again and again wrote that criticizing other people or complaining does nothing.  It may seem like such an obvious observation but more people could employ these simple little tips more and more in the work place.  Our training seminars at work would go a lot easier if other employees, and myself too, would be better listeners.

A country as unique as South Africa is bound to have its share of unique accommodations, and some of the finest of these are in its boutique hotels.  South Africa is one of the most fascinating places on the planet, with a very complicated and dynamic history.  There are many cultures and languages that exist here at once, and because of this, the cities are some of the most splendid places to see live art, public festivals, and meet fascinating people from all over the world.  The heart of the country is very cosmopolitan, and with Cape Town as the Mother City of the world, it takes in people from all over.  There is a tremendous sense of hospitality in the boutique hotels, then, drawing on this local tradition as well as striving to provide visitors with a unique experience in luxury travel.

You’ll find all the amenities you’d need to make your stay here comfortable, and a host of others to move it from comfortable and into heavenly.  Boutique hotels here are the finest in the world, offering an experience in accommodation that is simply exquisite.  For many guests, there hardly seems to be any need to even leave the hotel, as it offers a new experience in relaxation at every turn, and for others, the enchantments of the cities have a loud and persistent call.  The call might be coming from one of South Africa’s leading record-spinners, DJ Codax.

He’s the crown champion of African Hiphop in 2006, and placed 2nd in the Hennessy DJ battle in 2007, and one listen will tell you why.  But much better to see the master in person.  His spinning is absolutely stunning, moving from one beat and one track to another with a deftness that’s hard to imagine, and makes no sense eyes that are used to seeing the laws of physics observed.  He’s been playing for over 15 years in Cape Town, so there’s enormous experience behind the pulse here.  Look for the name Codax on the bill, and get a good spot.

Making New Friends in Formentera

October 19th, 2009

This morning at breakfast, we hooked up with another couple who were going to Formentera Island for the day. We met them last night at a club and we had a great time with them, we decided to spend another day with them on Formentera also. After breakfast, we took the ferry over to the island. Once we were aboard, we all crashed on the seats. We did party hardy last night after all. It only took 45 minutes for the ferry to reach the island.

We decided to go to a Formentera car rental. We noticed the moped rental shop too, but not everyone was thrilled about doing the moped thing. We first drove to Platja lljetes beach to hang out. It was sunny and warm, which was great since it was the first sunny day for a whole week. It was a perfect day at the beach. We noticed a lot of bicyclers riding along a dirt path. That looked like fun, but all of us were still so burnt out from last nights follies.

There were tons of people here at the beach. It was hard to find a place to park, but we were one of those luck people that just approached a car that was leaving! Otherwise we’d probably have to park a mile down the road. About 4 hours on the beach, relaxing on the lounges provided and enjoying each others company. The sun beating down on us felt good, we all got into the water once or twice. It was so beautiful here. Luckily we brought a water proof camera and we swam around taking all kinds of pictures. There was a yacht anchored not too far from the beach, so we swam out and when the yacht people noticed us they invited us up to hang out. We actually found the yacht people even more interesting than the couple we were with! But, we didn’t want to be rude, so we only got a quick tour of the yacht and we dove back in the water and swam back to the beach.

The couple we were with wanted to do some more exploring. But, before that, we grabbed a bite at this little beach restaurant. The island is small, but very beautiful. It was getting late, so we returned the rental and grabbed the ferry back to Ibiza (). We were still having so much fun that we made more arrangements to hook up with our new found friends for dinner, but we all agreed it was time for a quick nap.

Choosing a New Home With a Hot Tub Has Immediate Benefit

October 19th, 2009

Hot tubs can affect all many aspects of one’s lifestyle. Having one in a household’s backyard can contribute to many backyard parties and entertainment options. They can also be an extremely beneficial component to the owner’s sense of well being and even health. One recent homeowner, as well as her family and friends who were helping her to move, discovered on her first day in her new home one of the greatest benefits her new hot tub will provide.

Monique is a single woman who recently purchased a townhouse in Gilbert, Arizona. She was equally attracted to two different units in the home owner community and had a difficult time deciding between them. Some of her friends encouraged her to purchase the one that was in a slightly preferable location. However, Monique finally decided on the home that was right next to the community playground, and was actually one thousand dollars higher in cost. Typically, when considering the cost of a new home, a thousand dollars may not seem that important, but when placed in the context of a lesser attractive location it may become curious.

The reason Monique chose the home she did was based in part on some communications she had with choosehottubsdirect.com and the fact that her new home came with a hot tub in the backyard. She had always wanted one and after hearing how diverse in benefits they actually were, she chose the home that had one. And after a long and tedious day of moving and unpacking, Monique and her assistants enjoyed their first dip in the hot tub. Suddenly the friends that thought she should buy the other home changed their minds as their muscles relaxed in the pulsating water.

Horse Bazaar

October 15th, 2009

A trip to Melbourne is an exciting proposition.  It’s one of the great cultural and financial centers in Australia, and there are a million things to do.  It’s got great urban energy, with all sorts of artistic offerings to keep the aesthetic side of life well-fed, a vibrant cosmopolitan energy, and easy access to some absolutely stunning natural places.  Melbourne is a lovely place, constantly shifting and evolving, and constantly recreating its own unique identity.  It’s a fantastic place to find a great restaurant, and even better for a great hotel.  Melbourne, Australia is a real treasure, and we’ve selected some of the best accommodations to give you a marvelous time in the lap of luxury.

Our hotels are selected for their excellent records of offering a spectacular sense of hospitality to the guests, with a charm that is familiar and exotic at the same time.  Melbourne is a curious mix of old traditions and a great love for innovation, and the sophisticated balance here is remarkable.  After a short rest and a lovely meal, it’s time to check out the city life.  There are plenty of attractions to keep everyone busy, and very likely also quite happy, and if your tastes run toward hip and urban culture, you’ll certainly find plenty here.  One place to begin, or end, a perfect evening would be the Horse Bazaar.

This Melbourne pub is a fantastic artspace, run by some extremely savvy curators, who have a very good eye and ear for local art works, and a limitless number of fabulous connections, too, it seems.  They don’t just offer drinks, but also serve up visual art, video art, new media and digital art, installation art, sound art and live art.  You might guess that they also have a host of forms that run somewhere in between these, too.  Horse Bazaar is also a great place to hear some experimental djing, and it’s one of the venues for the Digital Fringe, the virtual arm of the local Fringe Festival that presents work by artists and hackers from all over the world.  It’s a very cool place to go, and also very friendly.

Exploring Northern Al from Huntsville

October 13th, 2009

Our drive through the Tennessee Valley was a beautiful one. We were out for a weekend driving the back roads and exploring the small towns in northern Alabama. We started out of Knoxville, TN on Friday morning and headed shout and west toward Chattanooga, TN. Much of the way we like to take back roads and explore little towns and villages, drive through the rolling hills and see some beautiful fall foliage. This year we decided to add a couple extra days to the drive and head to Huntsville, AL. Not having explored northern Alabama we thought is was time to.

We made a reservation at a hotels Huntsville for Saturday and Sunday night that way we could spend those days in north Alabama and take Monday and Tuesday to explore our way home. While checking in to our hotel the desk clerk told us about a town called Florence. She said it was about an hour to the west up the Tennessee River. The town was having their annual Renaissance Faire that weekend, she recommended it for something to do. We were really glad she did.

They have had this fair in Florence for over 20 years and it is held the forth weekend in October so we were luck to be out and about that weekend traveling. The fair is a big thing in Florence. Most renaissance fairs I am familiar with are set in parks or open spaces. In Florence the downtown area is recreated in the style of a 15th century village. There were hundreds of actors portraying life in the 1400′s. A well attended event with a lot of different performances and crafts people we really enjoyed ourselves. We thought initially we would only spend a few hours there but ended up enjoying ourselves so much we were there all day.

The drive was full of fun and adventure and lots of great scenery. I love being able to drive the Tennessee Valley in the fall.

The Changing Market and Customer Service

October 13th, 2009

In today’s market it is extremely important to demonstrate excellent customer service skills. This has always been a strong factor of successful businesses, however, with the shrinking global environment and the competition facing companies of all fields, a slight difference in the manner in which a consumer is treated may make all the difference in their willingness to return or to make the purchase. In addition, it is often overlooked how important excellent customer service is to Internet based businesses, which is something that Seven Barbarich, who has been both a frustrated consumer and ethical business practitioner, is well aware.

Offering a product or variety of products online may seem to be a wise choice for a business today. There are many aspects of overhead costs that can be avoided, and many businesses can be based right in the owner’s home. Frequently, the economic and convenience factors are the primary reason many online businesses get started. However, what often occurs is that full attention to and the development of a strong customer service policy is often overlooked.

It is just as important for an online company to be concerned with providing the exact service or product that they advertise and to ensure that the consumer is receiving exactly what they believe they are paying for. Customer support resources are essential in resolving concerns and answering questions. A customer feedback response system is one way for consumers to monitor online companies and base their patronage on the experience of others. When making a major purchase online, it can be extremely confusing and anxiety provoking. To ensure the success and growthof an online business, these issues must be recognized and properly addressed.
